Today is March 8 which is International Women’s Day. Every year on this date, the world celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while calling for the continued acceleration in gender parity. As everyone takes a moment to reflect, the Wayfair Tech Blog team took a few minutes to sit down with Wayfair’s new Chief Technology (CTO), Fiona Tan, to get to know her and hear her thoughts on International Women’s Day.

There is no ignoring the fact that 2021 proved to yet again be a year full of challenges and uncertainty for us all, including for the communities where we live, work, and play who continue to feel the many impacts of this global disruption. This is no different for the neighborhood around our own Boston headquarters – affectionately known as our “Wayborhood’ – which has felt the absence of business from office workers, many of whom have been working remotely throughout the pandemic.

Jennifer Phillips and Kristin Filippelli never considered themselves “runners,” but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and gyms closed, they both were in search of ways to keep themselves going. Both are colleagues on the Partner Operations team at Wayfair who partner with Wayfair’s suppliers to provide consumers with the products they love through an exceptional customer experience. When they each found out that they were training for the 2021 Boston Marathon, they joined forces to mobilize their team and amplify their impact.

With our global headquarters located in Boston’s Back Bay, we are constantly inspired and energized by the outstanding academic and entrepreneurial work being done all around us. Boston is steeped in history and education — some of its oldest institutions are its world-class universities. By comparison Wayfair is a relative newcomer, yet much like our neighbors in the academic world we’ve shared a love for experimentation and learning since the start.

When shopping for your home - it's personal. Home is where we unwind after a long day, where we spend quality time with family and friends. It’s where we play, entertain and, for many of us, it’s where we work. At Wayfair, we are focused on giving everyone the power to create spaces that are just right for them, and our award-winning Customer Service team plays an essential role in that. From sharing specialized product expertise for a home improvement project, or providing a delivery update for a much-anticipated crib, to being there to make it right if things go wrong, our team supports our customers every step of the way.

Certified Interview Program

Our Certified Interview Program aims to give every candidate a fair and equitable interview experience. In 2021, we updated our interviewer training program and provided coaching based on candidate feedback around interviewer behavior. The program also includes behavioral interviewing and bias training. We’ve seen a 73% completion rate for all the interviewers in this first year of the assigned training, as well as improvements in interviewer behavior scores based on candidate feedback. Our 2022 objective is to further build out the Certified Interview Program to drive accountability.

Connect With Community

What Our People Are Saying

Quote.png
Amanda, Women+@Work ERG
“One of the biggest honors of my career has been the opportunity to co-lead the Women+@Wayfair Employee Resource Group of Boston. Each day, I am inspired by the incredible talent, resilience, and grit of women+ at Wayfair. Our goal is to provide a meaningful framework and forum for the women+ communities at Wayfair to celebrate, learn, and amplify action.”

Patrick, WayOut ERG
“When I joined Wayfair, there was no formalized group for the LGBTQ+ community in Berlin. I found some like-minded people who were excited to start WayOut Berlin together. Now, a year later, we’re 100+ members and growing!”

Amber, WayBlack ERG
“I love being a lead for WayBlack Bryan. This gives us the opportunity to speak to colleagues around the company, educating them on the importance of respecting all of the talent that Black/African Americans bring to the company. Being able to use both of my passions of advocating for Black people and teaching/training our allies the best way to help their teams grow and adapt makes my career fulfilling, and I am so thankful for that.”
