At Wayfair, we celebrate our employees who are dedicated to supporting safe, accessible housing in their local communities. Since July of 2022, Wayfair employees have been working with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate representing Greater Boston on a project based in Malden, MA. After 35 years of building homes in Boston neighborhoods and nearby suburbs, Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston began looking for opportunities to build homes in communities north of Boston.

Malden is a special place for us and Habitat Greater Boston. Malden is in the midst of a revitalization program to improve its city center with increased green space and updated facilities for city services, including a new police station. The City’s officials and residents, including Mayor Gary Christenson and Deborah Burke, Director of the Office of Strategic Planning & Community Development, are enthusiastic about Habitat Greater Boston’s plans and welcomed them warmly into the community.

Wayfair has been on the ground in Malden since the start of the build, with over 100 employees volunteering their time and skills to help construct five townhouse style condos. We are proud to have Wayfair volunteers involved at every phase of construction, from site preparation to framing walls to exterior finishings. “We worked on a variety of projects, including building kitchen knee walls and framing a ceiling. People loved it both for the team bonding and for the opportunity to give back to the community,” said a Wayfair employee.

Getachew and Tsega are eager to move into their brand new home to learn everything that goes into building and maintaining a home. They’re looking forward to having their own space for watching movies and for their two boys to draw, ride their bikes outside and play with friends in the neighborhood.

James and Maya can’t wait to bake goodies in their new kitchen and take long walks in the neighborhood with their daughter. “We will accomplish something that was previously unattainable for our family,” James said.

Habitat Greater Boston is committed to making affordable homeownership achievable for families with low-to-moderate incomes in one of the most expensive cities in the country. With help from employees at Wayfair, five families will now have a permanent place to call home in Malden Massachusetts. Bringing a sense of home to all is important to us at Wayfair and we’re glad we are getting to do that in Malden.
