AI Guidelines
As your prospective employer, Wayfair has outlined our policy on how we use AI in hiring and how candidates are permitted to use AI in our hiring processes. Just as AI continues to evolve, Wayfair will review and update these guidelines as needed.
Our Guiding Principles
At Wayfair, we believe that each candidate brings unique skills and perspectives to the table. Our goal is to find the perfect fit for both the candidate and the company—the right person, on the right team, at the right time. Our interview process is designed to get to know you: your intelligence, skills, and experience. We want to see how you think on your feet and perform in real-time, based on your own experiences. We're looking for people whose abilities and perspectives align with and enhance our company values. While AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in both personal and professional spheres, Wayfair values the unique perspective of each candidate. We expect that your work during key aspects of the interview process reflects your own abilities and insights, not AI-generated content. To ensure fairness and transparency, we ask that you adhere to the AI usage policies outlined below during your interview.
Candidate AI Use Policies for the Wayfair Interview Process
We believe that preparation can boost interview performance. Feel free to use all available resources to prepare for your Wayfair interview, including online research, networking, asking your recruiter questions, and even AI tools. However, please refrain from using AI to enhance your performance during a live interview, unless explicitly instructed or permitted.
At Wayfair, we're excited to learn how candidates are using AI to enhance their job search and how you might use AI as a tool to facilitate your work at Wayfair. We encourage you to share in your interviews with us how you might leverage these tools in the role for which you are interviewing. To ensure a fair and transparent process for all, we ask that you use AI within the guidelines outlined below. If we notice AI being used beyond these guidelines, we may disqualify your application and/or to reach out to your references to confirm your qualifications and experience.
You must disclose or cite any AI tools that you use during your interview. Wayfair values honesty and integrity above all. We want to get to know the real you and the unique talents you bring to the table. Please ensure that your application and interview responses accurately reflect your skills and experience. Wayfair encourages you to use AI as follows:
- Application materials: Feel free to use AI tools to help you craft your resume and cover letter. We simply ask that you ensure the information you provide accurately reflects your skills and qualifications. This helps ensure that we can find the best match between your talents and our open roles!
- Take-home assignments: We're excited to see your take on the assignment! Feel free to research and explore the topic in a way that works best for you. While GenAI can be a helpful tool, remember that it can sometimes provide overly general or wordy responses. We're looking forward to seeing your unique perspective and insights shine through in your final submission!
- Live coding assessments: To give you a realistic experience of the work our engineers do, we design coding assessments that may incorporate the use of generative AI tools like Open AI, ChatGPT and Gemini, and GitHub CoPilot. For certain roles, we encourage the transparent use of generative AI during the interview process. We ask that you be prepared to clearly explain the prompts you use and the technical choices you make when using AI.
Do not use AI during the following parts of the recruiting process:
- Phone and Virtual interviews: We assess your interpersonal and collaborative skills during the interview process to determine if you are a good fit for the role. To ensure the integrity of the evaluation, please refrain from using AI-generated answers during your interview. If we discover that you have used such answers without authorization or prior disclosure, you may be disqualified from the hiring process. AI tools may not be used to transcribe or record the interview at any time. This ensures your privacy and Wayfair’s confidential information are protected.
How AI Supports Wayfair’s Talent Acquisition Team
At Wayfair, we are excited about the possibilities AI offers and are adopting it thoughtfully into our hiring practices. While AI can enhance efficiency, we firmly believe that human judgement is irreplaceable in making final hiring decisions. We see AI as a valuable tool to support our hiring teams, not a replacement for their expertise. We are committed to using AI responsibly to create a positive and fair experience for all candidates!
Here are some ways AI enhances Wayfair's hiring process:
- Supports recruiters in their efforts to identify candidates with the key skills required for posted positions.
- Improves Wayfair’s outreach to potential candidates, allowing Wayfair to find the best people for our teams.
- Supports Wayfair in its efforts to ensure all candidates are evaluated fairly and equitably based solely on their skills and qualifications.
- Facilitates interview scheduling and improves Wayfair’s ability to answer candidate questions quickly and efficiently.
- With candidate consent, Wayfair may use AI to transcribe interviews to allow interviewers to focus more on the candidate they are meeting and less on note-taking.
